Beginning teachers encounter serious
learning challenges during their first three years of teaching. At the
same time they are attempting to learn about and adapt their teaching
to their students and the local context. Beginning teachers also cope
with the challenges of forging a professional identity. To help beginning
teachers meet these challenges, mentor teachers must develop a set of
skills and dispositions that are somewhat distinct from teaching. One
way to develop these skills and dispositions is through mentor teacher
study groups.
