Tool: Developing
a shared vision of teaching
Purpose of this tool:
This tool is intended to assist you and your colleagues in developing
a shared vision of high quality teaching. In order to make mentoring more
than just helping beginning teachers survive their first few years, mentor
teachers (and their school colleagues) need to articulate the skills,
knowledge and dispositions of the teachers they want to help beginning
teachers become.
How to use this tool: This tool places national and state
teaching standards next to one another to help you and your colleagues
think about the skills, knowledge and dispositions you want to foster
in the beginning teachers with whom you work. As you read over the chart,
work with your colleagues to fill in the Local Standards column. You and
your colleagues should make use of any local – district, school,
department – standards and curricular documents that will help you
do this work. You can also refer to the Highly qualified teacher document
to inform your work.
