Montgomery County Maryland
All 193 schools in Montgomery County, Maryland, have a full-time staff
development teacher whose role is to provide building-level instructional
support. Each school also has a staff development substitute teacher who
is only available to relieve teachers for professional development. The
staff development substitute teacher receives higher pay than traditional
substitutes. The school staff developer schedules the substitute's time
based on requests from classroom teachers.

In addition to district-wide early release time every Thursday, Iowa City
Schools uses outside grant monies to buy substitute teacher time to assist
groups of teachers who work together or attend workshops.

Elementary schools:
Madison Park School (grades
3-8), Phoenix, Arizona
Two full-time substitute teachers are available to release teachers to
work together, individually, or with one of the school’s master
teachers. In addition, teachers have elected to exchange two preparation
periods a week for a larger block of time for teacher collaboration.

Camelview Elementary School (grades K-2), Phoenix, Arizona
With additional outside funding, the school hired an extra teacher who
specializes in social studies and science. The school has also designated
a 90-minute block of time for professional development four days a week.
During this time, students attend specials, including science and social
studies, while teachers work both collaboratively and individually.
