Overview of the Module on Developing Curriculum

This module will provide new teachers with an in-depth understanding and hands on practice with the best research-based approach to developing curriculum. Teachers will learn both how to use curriculum standards and how to develop curriculum that reflects the four Michigan Teaching and Learning Standards.  These are

  • Curriculum that focuses on higher order thinking
  • Curriculum that features deep knowledge--lessons that address central ideas of a topic with enough depth to explore connections and relationships to other ideas and subjects
  • Curriculum that encourages substantive conversation about subject matter in a way that builds an improved and shared understanding
  • Curriculum that makes connections between new knowledge and public problems or personal experiences

The module includes three sub-sections of 8 to 10 hours. These parts address:

Each section will include the following features:

Connecting to the Case : How did Mrs. Vega do this?

•  In this section, teachers will be exposed to a narrative case study featuring Mrs. Vega and her class with an integrating subject curriculum built around the theme of hospitals. Exercises will be provided for teachers to closely examine this case and learn from this example.

Put it into Practice: Connecting to your classroom. How can you do this?

•  In this section, teachers will be guided through the curriculum development process by completing a series of reflective exercises. As teachers work through exercises they will develop a unit for their classroom based on Michigan Curriculum Standards.

Connect with Teachers : How have others done this?

•  Here you will meet teachers who will talk about their curriculum development experiences and share advice.

Further Reading: What does research say about this?

•  Here there will be short articles reviewing what research has to say about various aspects of the curriculum development processes. Bibliographies will be provided with suggested resources/research for further reading.

This is what you will create:
