Where is Liz going to find time to orient a community volunteer?
Absenteeism was one of the major challenges Liz faced in teaching her general math class. Just as she got one student caught up, another would be absent for a few days and feel totally lost during class discussions. And she was well aware that a student who feels lost could choose to “entertain” herself in disruptive ways. Fortunately, Mr. Martin, a retired math teacher, had volunteered to come in for an hour each day and do some tutoring for kids who were behind. But when in the world would she have time to let him know exactly what students needed to do, when he would be arriving just as she began teaching her 4th-hour class? She couldn’t afford to pass up Mr. Martin’s offer, so she decided to brainstorm ideas with her mentor, Evelyn.
