Janet doesn’t talk about school with her mother

A phone call from Mrs. Aldo told Valerie, a 7th-grade teacher, that 13-year-old Janet Aldo was not helping her family understand what was going on during language arts class. Mrs. Aldo explained, “All Janet ever says when I ask her about what you did in class is ‘not much.’ Is my daughter being stimulated in your class?” Valerie was quite puzzled to hear this since their Book Club and writing workshop were going very well, and Janet was an active participant in both. Earlier in the year, Valerie had even sent home written descriptions of how these two types of activities were implemented in her class. This issue seemed to be a timely one to raise during her scheduled meeting with her mentor, Angela, the following day.
