Tool: Identifying teachable moments

It may seem that prescribed standards and curricula put teachers in staitjackets, with no room to maneuver. However, the better a teacher's understanding of the content that students should master (see curriculum mapping), the more the teacher can take advantage of opportunities that arise sponteneously--teachable moments. That takes appreciable time and practice.

Mentor teachers can support beginning teachers' learning by helping to identify potential teachable moments in an observed class and linking those moments to content standards, so that the opportunities can be seen more clearly:
